FRANCIE - BARBIE'S MOD COUSIN. In the late 1960's Mattel saw the fashion trends changing but worried that updating Barbie's clothes to the new "Mod" style might hurt sales. So they invented a new doll and dubbed her Francie. She was Barbie's swinging 60's cousin from England who sported all the latest Carnaby Street trends.
The Francie doll took off in a big way and remained popular well into the 1970's. Not long after her arrival Barbie herself began to go "Mod" as well.
