HULA DANCERS

HULA DANCERS. These are Japanese issue dolls and therefore somewhat strange. For one the scenic bases are actually a part of the doll. The costumes fit into slits cut under each doll's chin and then into slits in the bases which I don't much care for.  The large headdresses will need some reinforcement in order to stay on the heads I think. Anyway they are very colorful and lively illustrations and I like that very much.

SNOW WHITE DOLL

SNOW WHITE DOLL. Here is a really lovely version of the classic fairytale character. This is unusual for the many different hairstyles portrayed. I really like the last gown with the 7 dwarfs gathered around her.

 

THE KELLY SISTERS

THE KELLY SISTERS. Doll #1 is Kathleen and Doll #2 is Nora. And this is another repurposed Shirley Temple set from the 1930's. The publishers came up with these two fictitious "sisters" as a way to reissue the Temple sets in the 1940's after Shirley's popularity had waned. They just added some new heads but I'm sure it was obvious even to little girls that these fashions were at least a decade out of date.

A fairly common practice in the paper doll world. 

 

VOGUE PATTERN DOLL

VOGUE PATTERN DOLL. Another interesting mix of advertisement and paper doll. This is from the kid's magazine Jack and Jill. All the little girl had to do if she wanted an outfit like the illustration was to take the little paper dress to mommy. The Vogue pattern number was printed right on the shoulder tab. There was even a back view illustrated. Ingenious!

 

GERMAN FASHION MAGAZINE DOLL

GERMAN FASHION MAGAZINE DOLL. An interesting marketing ploy from a German magazine. These crisp mid-60's styles were displayed as paper doll clothes for a daughter to play with and the discerning mother to emulate perhaps. My German is a bit rusty but I did recognize that the pages were in fact labeled "for mother". 

 

BARBIE SWEET SIXTEEN

BARBIE SWEET SIXTEEN. Even Barbie was young once, and why not? I like these sporty outfits which seem somewhat more realistic than the fashions in some of the other Barbie sets from the 1980's.

 

JOAN WALSH ANGLUND GREETING CARD DOLL

JOAN WALSH ANGLUND GREETING CARD DOLL. Late posting today due to doctor's appointments. There is something eternally charming about the Anglund characters and this doll, originally distributed as a greeting card, is no exception.
